Baltimore Magazine - June 2007 - Best Places to Work - Tucked away in a standard corporate office building in a standard corporate park in Ellicott City, there is a sleek and stylish office space that company founder Ed Stern would describe as, well, redheaded. In other words, it sticks out. It dares to be different. And that's not, in this case, a bad thing. First, there's the dot-com-ish décor, which eschews the angles and offices of most office buildings and features, instead, curved walls and open spaces. Then there's Area 19, a wide-open common room with comfy couches, a ping pong table, and yoga mats. But the company is redheaded in more than just its space. Before he founded The Stern Agency in 1991, Ed Stern had seen his share of advertising agencies. "The advertising agency business is one that often creates factions, with one group disrespecting another," says Stern. "We tried to create a different kind of company. Anything even clost to that attitude is not permitted here." Stern shuns the hiearchical nature of most agencies and instead opts for a shared governance approach with his management team. All told, it's an atmosphere that breeds teamwork and respect. Plus, after six months of employment, every employee gets four weeks of vacation and in the summer the office closes at 2:00 p.m. on Fridays. How redheaded is that?
